Velvet Drive 71C and 72C parts diagram

This is the factory exploded view of the Velvet Drive 71C and 72C, Figure 8 from the Borg-Warner service manual (current production). Find your model number on the ID tag

The ID tag is a small metal tag on the transmission mount. It's stamped with a model number and a serial number.

A model number that starts 10-17 is a 71C.
One that starts 10-18 is a 72C.

The last three digits pin down the exact unit: its ratio, the case style, and whether a reduction unit is bolted on. We often write these short, so 10-17-000-004 and 1017-004 are the same unit. Type either one into the tag box above.

What the marks in the factory list mean

* The number depends on the model number on your ID tag.
** It depends on which reduction unit, if any, is bolted to the back. On Figure 8 that's items 9 to 16. Call us with your tag number and we'll look it up.
*** Check the model chart. That's the case (item 98) and the forward pinion carrier (item 85).
NSS means not serviced separately. The factory doesn't sell it by itself, so you buy the next assembly up.

71C or 72C: the parts that differ

Most of Figure 8 is shared. These 20 items take a different part number on a 72C. The forward clutch pack kit is different too: A4867AE for 10-17 units, A4867AB for 10-18 units.

Common questions

Where's the ID tag on a 71C or 72C?

On the transmission mount. It's a small metal tag stamped with the model number and serial number.

Are 71C and 72C parts the same?

Most of them. 20 of the 98 items on Figure 8 take a different part number on the 72C, including the coupling, bearings, forward clutch cylinder, ring gear, forward clutch hub and drive gear. The table above lists them.

What does NSS mean in the parts list?

Not serviced separately. The factory doesn't sell that part alone, so you buy the next assembly up.

Why is there no single number for the case or pinion carrier?

They change with the model. Find your model number on the ID tag, then check the model chart.

Does this drawing cover reduction units?

No. Figure 8 is the transmission itself. Reduction units have their own drawings in the manual, and items 9 to 16 here change with the reduction unit. Call us with your tag number for those.
