Which Velvet Drive rebuild kit do I need?

Short answer: On a 71C/72C, seals and clutch parts are separate factory kits: A4867HA covers seals, A4867AE/AB covers the forward clutch pack. Hale's HALE001/HALE002 are major overhaul kits. ZF/Hurth splits between an overhaul kit and a master kit that adds plates.

71C/72C (1017/1018) seal and gasket kits

A4867HA ($303.75) is the factory 71-72 Series Gasket & Seal Kit: oil seals and sealing rings, plus the service gasket kit. It doesn't include any clutch parts.

71C/72C clutch kits

A4867AE ($318.75) covers the 71C forward clutch pack: pressure plates, steel plates and friction plates. A4867AB ($312.50) is the same thing for a 72C. Neither includes seals, so these complement A4867HA rather than replace it. If your rebuild needs both worn seals and a tired clutch pack, you're looking at two kits, not one.

Hale's master kits

If you'd rather order one kit for a full 71C or 72C overhaul, Hale puts together HALE001 (~~$312.50~~ $247.99) and HALE002 (~~$373.75~~ $289.99). HALE001 is listed for the 71C (1017) line; the store listing names the 1017-003, -004, -005, -007, -008, -009, -010, -012 and -202. HALE002 is listed for the 72C (1018) line. 5000 kits

Hale stocks these for the 5000:

2001-410-001 ($666.25): 5000A Seal & Gasket Kit.
2002-410-001 ($666.25): 5000V Gasket and Seal Kit.
2001-410-002 ($1,362.50): Clutch Rebuild Kit, listed for the 2001 and 2002.

Heads up: the factory's 5000V parts catalog lists its -410-002 kit (W2002-410002) as a gasket, seal and clutch kit, not clutch parts alone. Call us before you order a seal kit on top of the clutch kit, and we'll tell you what's in the box.

A 5000V clutch pack itself runs 8 bronze plates and 7 steel plates per clutch, with 12 bolts and a mix of 4 heavy and 12 light springs per clutch, plus 8 shim sizes from .003 to .070 in to set the stack. The clutch bolts take 16-18 lb-ft, with Loctite pre-applied at the factory.

ZF/Hurth kits

ZF and Hurth kits come in two tiers, and the naming isn't obvious unless you know what to look for. The 316807-series kits (316807AB ($332.50) for the ZF63IV/HSW630V V-drive, 316807B ($146.25) for the ZF63A/HSW630A) are overhaul kits: gaskets, o-rings, metal-clad seals and sealing rings, no plates. 316907 ($813.75) is a master overhaul kit for the ZF63A/HSW630A1: it includes everything in the overhaul kit plus bronze and steel clutch plates. So a 316807-series kit is the seal-only equivalent of a Velvet Drive A4867HA, and 316907 is the seal-plus-clutch equivalent of ordering both an HA and a clutch kit together.

What's the difference between A4867HA and A4867AE?

A4867HA is the seal and gasket kit, no clutch parts. A4867AE (71C) or A4867AB (72C) is the forward clutch pack kit, no seals. You need both if you're replacing seals and the clutch pack.

What's the difference between a ZF overhaul kit and a master kit?

An overhaul kit (316807-series) is gaskets, o-rings and seals only. A master kit like 316907 adds bronze and steel clutch plates on top of that.
