71C/72C in-line

The main reference for the cast iron 71C and 72C in-line transmissions is the Borg-Warner service manual, Form 1289, covering models as of April 1986 and revised in August 1988. It has the full model and AS-number cross-reference chart, assembly and teardown steps, clutch clearances and snap-ring sizes, the Table 3 troubleshooting chart split into five buckets (leaks; no drive in either direction; forward-or-reverse-only; miscellaneous noise; neutral problems), and Table 4 and Table 6, the factory torque and pressure specs.

A companion owner's manual, published while the business was based in New Bedford, covers day to day operation: alignment, fluid checks and changes, and the 71/72 spec sheet appended at the back with weights, lengths and horsepower ratings. An older Warner Gear identification chart covers the 70C and 73C as well, which helps if your unit predates the 1986 manual.

1004/1005 V-drive

The 71C/72C V-drive units, which Velvet Drive numbers 1004 and 1005, have their own service manual, first issued in 1988 and revised twice since. We cite it by name rather than linking a copy. The 71/72 spec sheet still covers the V-drive's ratios and weights alongside the in-line units.

5000 and Liberty

The Series 5000 has its own factory service manual, and the newer Liberty line has a separate one, both hosted by a Velvet Drive distributor. The Liberty owner's manual and the Liberty brochure are public too, and between the four documents they cover ratios, capacities, pressures, rotation and winter layup for the whole 5000/Liberty family. A parts catalog for the 5000 Series V-drive, with genuine factory part numbers, fills in the rest.

CR-2

The counter-rotating CR-2, Velvet Drive's 10-13/10-14, has its own 17-page service manual, plus a distributor spec page listing its four ratios. We haven't found anything else specific to the CR-2 beyond those two documents.

Installation manual

One installation manual, dated 1982, covers every Velvet Drive transmission built at the time: alignment procedure, cooler line sizing, rotation, shift-cable setup, and references to service bulletins. We haven't found it posted publicly, so we cite it by name when we use it.

Owner's manuals

Two owner's manuals cover day to day use rather than rebuilding: one for 71C/72C in-line and V-drive units, one for the Liberty series. Both are public, and we've linked them below.
