Transmission Rebuild Service
We rebuild Velvet Drive transmissions (71C, 72C, 5000A/5000V, 1004/1005 V-drive, CR-2), ZF/Hurth transmissions (ZF63, ZF68, ZF80, ZF45) and Paragon units. Every transmission we build gets a new pump, and we run it for an hour and a half on our own test stand before it ships.
How it works
- Call or email us first. Tell us the model or part number if you have it. Phone Mon-Fri 9-3 ET at (804) 333-3677, or email sales@halemarine.com (answered within about 24 hours, 7 days a week).
- Send us the transmission, and just the transmission. Don't ship the cooler, cooling lines, bell housing, mounts or linkage with it. It takes us extra time to get all that off, and we'll be charging extra for it.
- We tear it down and diagnose it. Chris videotapes every transmission that comes and goes. We go through the clutch packs, planetary, bushings, seals and selector valve.
- We rebuild it with a new pump. We buy our parts directly from Velvet Drive, and that's what lets us afford a new pump on every transmission.
- We run it on the test stand. We check forward, neutral and reverse pressure, look for leaks at the front seal, rear seal, selector valve, coupling and neutral safety switch, and listen for abnormal noise or vibration. The long run is how we catch things like a selector valve that starts cross-feeding after about an hour.
- We ship it back. Smaller units go out by UPS, and the bigger 72-series units go by truck. We ship all over the world.
Getting a quote
Call or email us with the model and what's wrong, and we'll get you a quote. If you'd rather swap for one of our rebuilt units, see our core exchange policy.
By series
Velvet Drive 71C / 72C
Cast-iron 71C and 72C units, direct drive and reduction. See the 71C series page and 72C series page.
Velvet Drive 5000A / 5000V and Liberty
All those little springs and things are why 5000s are so expensive to rebuild. See the 5000 series page.
1004/1005 V-drive
We rebuild these, but we'll tell you straight: Velvet Drive isn't making the gears and shafts anymore. See the V-drive series page before you buy a boat with one of these in it.
CR-2
These are obsolete, and some of their components are different from the other cast-iron units, but we still work on them. See the CR-2 series page.
ZF / Hurth
ZF63, ZF68 and ZF80 rebuilds. See the ZF63 page and ZF68/ZF80 page.
Paragon
We rebuild Paragon units, though usable parts can be hard to come by. On one job Chris had taken three of them apart and was getting very little he could use. See the Paragon series page.
