Borg Warner to Velvet Drive Part Number Cross-Reference
Old cast-iron Velvet Drives have been around a long time. Chris calls the 71C and 72C "Borg Warner Velvet Drive" transmissions, and he's had a 1017-004 and an early 5000 series unit on the bench that were built by Borg Warner. Velvet Drive's own Liberty brochure says Regal-Beloit bought the company from Borg Warner in 1995, and Velvet Drive's website says it became a division of Pleasurecraft Engine Group in April 2019.
The same part can also turn up under two numbers: a short one like 5C-A66A or 72-6, and a longer Velvet Drive number like 3000-166-001 or 1016-162-001. How to read the numbers on a cast-iron Velvet Drive
On the 71 and 72 series, the first four digits tell you what you've got. Chris says the number on a 71C should always read 10-17 something. Velvet Drive's spec sheet breaks it down like this:

The spec sheet writes the full assembly number with dashes after the 10, like 10-18-000-008. We list that same unit as 1018-000-008, and in the shop it usually gets shortened to 1018-008. Chris even titled one of his videos "1018-000-008 (1018-008)". Two numbers with the same ratio aren't the same transmission. On the V-drives, Velvet Drive's sheet says to specify output shaft rotation, same as or opposite to the engine, when ordering. And if your paperwork says 1.91:1, Chris calls the 1.88:1 its replacement ratio.
A few more things that help when you're reading a tag:
- When Velvet Drive starts a new series, the serial numbers start at 1000.
- Really old units can carry an AS-style model number instead, like AS7-71CR or AS7-72CR. Chris dates the bushing-style ones to the 1970s. Those old tags don't line up one-to-one with the 10-17 numbers in a way we're ready to publish, so send us what's on yours and we'll help you sort it out.

5000 and Liberty series
The Liberty series is the 5000 family. Chris calls it the "5000 or Liberty series, whichever you want to call it," and he titled one video "3001-004 (2001-004)". They aren't identical, though. Chris says the main difference is the case: they beefed up the casting and changed the pump housing style, but it still uses the same pump. Our rebuilt exchange listings carry both numbers:
